happy national day!

while celebrating our nation's 42nd birthday, we would also like to celebrate the launching of 881, the latest dish out by local director roystan tan.

roystan tan's latest film 881 is based entirely on the festival's getai performers whose job is to take to the stage to entertain the spirits of the dead. it is a story about two girls with one dream - becoming superstar getai performers at the hungry ghost festival.

881 revolves around the lives of these flamboyant performers, which the chinese festival has become synonymous with. The stars of this film actually go by the name of papaya sisters, starring yeo yann yann and mindee ong.

getai performances have always been a hit among the older generation, but this film may just create a whole new fan base.

i like hokkien songs, though i may not sing. i like how hokkien sounds to me, though i may not understand. i do not feel a tad shy about telling friends that i go all out to watch getai, as nothing is as close as the heritage so rich and colorful. not to mention the carnival of sequins and feathers. lol.

which is what makes singapore so special and unique.

881 stars qi yu wu, mindee ong, yeo yann yann, may and choy, and liu ling ling.
in cinemas on aug 09.
